At the end of the day though this spell does what it promises in a good enough way that it can find a home on your sheets in the early game. The Warlock Pact of the Blade feature has two parts: you can create a pact weapon in your hand, or you can make a magic weapon into your pact weapon. Hex is probably just better than this in warlock as it lasts way longer and bumps your damage up to roughly the same amount with weapon attacks, and wizards and sorcerers will quickly find building towards this is challenging to say the least with so many other powerful options out there. I don’t think I’d ever take it, as I’ve already lived my edgy character dreams, but for those of you looking to do the shadowy evil anti-hero thing, this can do it early. As soon as you’re getting 3rd and 4th level spells, this becomes basically uncastable as you get way better options for damage, but at levels three and four, this is perfectly fine for a big fight. If you already have a +2 or +3 Dex, shortswords and short bows are your best friend. An annoying element of the spell is that you can’t use your spellcasting modifier to attack with it, meaning you’re going to want to already be playing a character with a decent enough reason to carry regular weapons on you. This is basically a magical longsword as a spell, but worse. Mechanically, it's a 2d8 thrown weapon with 20/60 range you have to concentrate on that gets advantage on attacks in darkness.
