Once he gets a whiff of Yo-han, however, the hotheaded detective is not letting the aloof doctor off his radar. While he is still filled with wrath and vows to get himself arrested for taking down a vile criminal so he can eventually end the death-row convict’s life with his own hands, his now-impaired hyung becomes a forgiving priest. He and his older brother are sole survivors of Head Hunter’s attacks, who became the key witness to identify then have him nabbed. The police ain’t quick to suspect Yo-han despite the parallels, not even Go Moo-chi (Lee Hee-joon) who’s been looking for him (to scar him the way his dad scarred him for life). Like, come on, that 1% gonna mean something, no? I’m not sure about episode 6’s ending, though if he does have cold-blooded tendencies after all… though i expected him to defy the odds and become a genius instead. Like when he’s revealed to be the kidnapper at the end of episode 4, which i supposed was a red herring as it was too early for a major twist, not to mention wild for Show to turn its male lead villainous. ‘Cuz while the test is only 99% accurate (the remaining 1% is false positive for geniuses), he seems neither psychopathic nor genius… unless it’s all an act. On the other hand, there’s Jung Ba-reum (Lee Seung-gi) who looks super ordinary and average be it as a man or a rookie police officer: kind, selfless, and fainthearted, that i wonder where that special DNA goes.

One of them is the son of the infamous serial killer nicknamed Head Hunter (Ahn Jae-wook), Sung Yo-han (Kwon Hwa-woon), who is honestly too obvious and boring of a case of history repeating itself due to the blood connection and exact same profession - a surgeon - they hold. We know at least two of such cases among the central characters - three if the politician’s long-awaited child is also one, judging from the professor’s serious expression when handing over the test result. But the law that shall forbid positively tested babies from being born wasn’t passed 20 years ago, and now people are paying the price as new breed of predators are ratting around the innocents. Is set in the world where science has discovered and devised a way to detect psychopath DNA in fetuses, which allows future generations to live in a war-free and crime-free Korea.

(The impressions below are based on the first six episodes.) Mouse is more procedural, Beyond Evil is psychological the former pumps the adrenaline by the fast-moving story and sick murders, the later is slow-paced but toying with your mind with the mystery. Both are cop/crime thrillers centering on serial killers and placing their respective male lead as the prime suspect.

BEYOND EVIL SHOW SERIES

I would usually do a series review for shows like these - that’s my original plan too - but i have too many of this genre on my plate at the moment (i have yet to watch the last few episodes of Times and rewatch the finale of Tengoku to Jigoku with subs and then review them) to pay proper attention to each drama’s details that i may need to put one of them on hold till then, or till i find lighter shows to offset these two’s somberness that i might as well touch upon them briefly now. It’s been a while since i cover more than one drama in one post, and while these two may not be exactly comparable, i can find some similarities in the subject matter and setup.

Although by the time this post is up, one of them may have already ended. Two of the highly buzzed k-dramas at the moment, for the right reasons.
